Black History Ministry

 

The purpose of the Black History Ministry is to explore, enrich and educate the Bethel family and community on issues that provide information relating to the African American experience through a variety of diverse programs.

"The Black History Ministry of Bethel honors, for her May 12th birthday, the memory of our Lorraine Roberts and her legacy of community leadership and service, as Bethel Church Historian and the driving force of the Black History Ministry. We wish to effectively continue her legacy."

• Patricia Bath, MD. First black female physician awarded a patent for a medical invention.

• Lonnie Bristow, MD. First black physician elected President of the American Medical Association.

• Nathan Francis Mossell, Co-founder of one of the first black hospitals in the U.S.

• Jane Cooke Wright, MD. First woman elected president of the New York Cancer Society.

• Charles Drew known as the inventor of the blood bank

• Marilyn Gaston, MD. - first black female director of a U.S. Public Health Service bureau.

• Myra Adele Logan, the first woman to perform open-heart surgery

• Michael Croslin (b.1933) invented computerized blood pressure and pulse monitoring devices
